Member of an Alsatian gymnastics society from an early age and exiled to Paris after the defeat of sedan, he is one of the main architects of the development of the union of gymnastics societies of France. Joseph sansbuf participates in 1860 exercise sessions of guebwiller gymnastics society recently founded by engineer-architect jean-jacques ziegler who organizes on 12 May of the following year the first gymnastics party to guebviller. Offered as an active member of the association on January 6, 1866, he quickly appeared in the regional competitions and was among the winners at epinal in 1868 and strasbourg in 1869. Hired as an apprentice by ziegler, he participated in the design of major projects like the balloon lake declivity system on guebwiller heights. Before his 18th year he was a deputy member of the committee and delegate of the gymnasts of Guebwiller to the association of Alsatian gymnasts (aga) formed in the mid 1860s. Through the excursions and banquets that accompany the gymnastics practice of the time, he cotoîe from his young age the municipal elites and the masonic lodge the perfect harmony of mulhouse which counts among its members the brother Jean Macé. Joseph Sansboeuf participates in the war of 1870 - 1871 as sergeant-major of the mobile guards of Haut-Rhin. Taken prisoner during the capitulation of the city of Neuf-Brisach on November 10, 1870, he was taken captive to Rastadt; he is released in March of the following year. In 1881 he is asked as an architect by george demenÿ, national monitor of which he is president, for the realization of the physiological station of etienne-jules marey at the park of the princes in the Bois de Boulogne. He joined the society of veterans of land and sea armies in 1897 and became general president in 1903.

He died in December 1938 as a result of bronchopneumonia; the president punched say that he took "part in the victory" of 1918. Gymnastics in 1871, he found in paris jean-jacques ziegler who opened an architectural firm and upon his arrival joins the society of gymnastics the national. He joined the presidency in a few months and opted for French nationality on August 27, 1872. In September 1873 he was one of the 19 founders of the lunion gymnastics societies of France (usgf).

Alongside jean-jacques ziegler, he is the general secretary of the organizing committee for the National Regeneration Day held in Paris on 16 and 17 May 1875 under the effective chairmanship of Jules Simon. In 1876 he founded the Association of Gymnastics of the Seine (ASGS) and the Alsatian-Lorraine Gymnastics Society, a year after the municipal company of puteaux created by other exiles Alsatian. The arrival in the presidency of the republic of Julius Grevy in 1879 triggers a campaign for physical and military exercises in the direction of youth for the purpose of national recovery. "In order to awaken the spirits and liberate lalsace-Lorraine" joseph sansbuf contributes through gymnastics and physical and military activities with coubertin stone, georges demenÿ, paul dépetède, paschal grousset, jean macé. On 23 July 1881 he contributes as lusgf delegate to the foundation of the European Gymnastics Bureau (beg). Within the USGF he is not slow to enter into conflicts with eugenes paz whose moderation is hampering his militarist concerns. The federal festivals are multiplying in the province and during the fourteenth to saints he is appointed president of the USGF May 21, 1888. By meeting before the President of the Republic Sadi Carnot more than 10,000 gymnasts from 830 foreign companies and in 1889 at the xve federale de paris at the polygon de vincennes, sansbuf seals the alliance between the gymnasts of lusgf and the french state: the gymnastics societies are allowed to parade behind the troop corps with their music and their flag. Only at this time sansbuf sees his mandate renewed the following year3. The beginnings of school sport the same year, sansbuf adheres to paschal grousset's proposal: the creation of a national league of physical education (lnep) to promote a physical education from the traditional French games. The first lendit is organized from 16 to 23 June 1889 by lnep. It ends at the Bois de Boulogne with a school games party attended by the President of the Republic Sadi Carnot. It will be the same from May 29 to June 8, 1890, for the second edition.

Ten days earlier, on May 18, 1890, one is surprised to find sansbuf to run for Pierre de Coubertin, sworn enemy of Grousset, the first Gymnastics Contest for high school, college and other Paris and Versailles schools. Coubertin, who obtained in November 1888 the governmental authorization to organize a congress of physical exercises on the occasion of the universal exhibition of Paris of 1889, has already rallied the most influential members of the lnep such as President Berthelot and Etienne Marey. Political life on May 18, 1882 that same year, on the occasion of the handing over to lasgs - created and still chaired by sansbuf - of his flag donated by Madame Thiers, Paul Unfold exposes his National Defense League project in front of a gathering of personalities leading policies. The societies of gymnasts of the Seine respond immediately to the call and the same evening a provisional committee chaired by Henri Martin is constituted. This league of patriots as the league teaching Jean Macé is a republican bastion with the support of Freemasons lodge Dalsace-Lorraine.

Joseph sansbuf is then also a member of the general association of Alsace-Lorraine (agal), close to the republican union of Leon Gambetta. Since the death of the latter in December 1882 he organizes every year in his honor a patriotic celebration as president and founder of the federation of Alsatian-Lorraine companies of France and colonies (fsalfc). Joseph Sansboeuf assumes the presidency of the League of Patriots on April 18, 1887 in a Franco-German context tense by repressive measures and arrests in Alsace. The Boulangiste de Boulède engagement thus puts the league in difficulty with regard to opinion and government. From December 17, sansbuf dissociates itself from a process that maintains its course of action despite a minority and leaves the league and its presidency definitively.

In the same year, he was elected president of lusgf and joined the municipal life as deputy mayor of the 8th arrondissement of Paris where he remained in office until his death in December 1938 following a bronchopneumonia. .
